Feature Request
From Plex
Contents |
Overview
Here are the steps you will need to take to create a feature request. But before we get there take a while and think about your feature.
- Write down as much information as you can, be descriptive.
- Think how you would explain this feature to someone who has never thought of it.
- Will this feature help other users?
- Does this feature help Plex become a better OS X application?
- Will this feature cause feature bloat, sometimes less is more...
- Can your Mother, Father, Wife, Husband, Sister, Brother, Grandmother, Grandfather use this feature without a CS degree?
Now that you've gone through the items above, you're ready to submit your feature! Remember, Developers can't read your mind! Be as descriptive as possible! Also just because you think it's the most important idea ever the people actually doing the work might not, don't get mad if someone doesn't immediately implement it.
Discussion
The second part of a feature request is discussion. See what other people think of the feature, or if it already exists!
You can talk about new features at the User Feature Forums
(Did we mention we like it if people search first before suggesting or asking?)
Steps to submit (a proper) feature request
- Login to Lighthouse (if you are new create a user account with a VALID E-mail so we can contact you about the feature).
- Search and browse current tickets to make sure someone hasn't already thought of your feature. If they have leave a "me too" comment.
- Create a new ticket.
- Make a detailed write up of your issue, be descriptive but concise. Pretend like your selling the feature to someone who never knew they wanted it.
- Upload any pictures, diagrams, mockups, etc.
- Make sure to indicate which version it is using the Version Pulldown.
- DO NOT set a milestone unless you are a developer and expect to implement the feature yourself
- If you posted a message on the forums, edit it and include the Ticket Number in your Topic Description so others know there is a ticket.
- Everything else is up to you! If you can describe a feature and generate enough support for it eventually someone will take the time to add it in!
Questions
Q: My feature is sooooo important to me, why isn't it included now?
A: Adding features takes time from a developer, since they are not paid they work on issues they feel will satisfy more users. Bugs also take priority over features as a stable product with few features is much better than a unstable product with hundreds of features.
Q: I can read and understand english but I am not very comfortable describing my feature request in english. What can I do?
A: Please, visit our Multilingual forums, describe your feature request in your own language and ask for other users help to translate it. Please, always keep in mind the recomendations in this page.
