Before You Install Plex Media Server
The Plex Media Server is available for Mac OS X and Windows.
It is possible to complete the installation process without having your media files named correctly and stored in their folders. However, we strongly recommend that you review the Media Naming and Organization Guide and place properly-named media files in their folders before adding your content to the Plex Media Server in order to help minimize potential issues.
Installation - Mac OS X
Installation of the Plex Media Server
The Plex Media Server application is now distributed separately from the Mac OS X desktop client.
- Visit the Plex homepage and download the latest version for Mac OS X
- Unzip the downloaded file, resulting in a Plex Media Server.app application (the .app extension will typically be hidden)
- Drag and drop the Plex Media Server app to your Applications folder
- If you're currently running a Plex Media Server on this computer, be sure to quit out of it
- Launch the Plex Media Server from the Applications folder
First-Run Configuration
When the application launches for the first time, you'll be prompted to go through a short configuration wizard.
Read the Welcome screen
Then click Next
License Agreement
Read the License Agreement and choose Agree or Disagree.
Choose your Movies, TV Shows or Music folder
Drag and drop your Movies folder into the window or use the ‘+’ button. If you need to remove a folder, choose it and click the ‘-’ button. You can change the folders selected in the Media Manager at a later time. Click the Next button and do the same for your TV Shows and Music sections. If you don't want to add a source for one of the Sections, click Skip for that section. You can always add content later, too!
Add some Plug-ins
Plex allows you to access on-line media from a variety of sources. The Setup Assistant lets you choose a couple from the huge number of plug-ins available. If you want to add any of the plug-ins, check them here, then click Next.
Install Soundflower
Soundflower is an extension that allows Plex to capture audio from Flash and Silverlight media. If you plan to use Plugins that have Flash or Silverlight content, or stream this to an iOS device, you should choose to install Soundflower. Check the checkbox to install the extension then click Next
Update information
You can choose to receive information updates from Plex. Only important information is sent to you, and your e-mail address will be kept confidential. If you agree to receive information, please enter your e-mail address. We also like to collect data about your use and any issues you may have experienced with Plex. Any information we gather is anonymous and cannot identify you as a user. Make your selection and click Next
Updating Plex components
Plex will now fetch the most recent version of it’s various components.
Finished
This completes the initial setup of Plex. You can choose to launch the Plex Client or visit the Apple Store to learn about the Plex iOS app. Choose either of these buttons or click Close.
Initial Media Scan Starts
Once the Media Server finishes updating its various components, it will begin its first-scan of your media. You will see a notification in your Mac’s top menu bar. You can open the Media Manager to monitor its progress by clicking Media Manager...
Installation - Windows
Installing Plex Media Server for Windows
Before you can install Plex Media Server for Windows, you need to visit www.plexapp.com and download the installer. Once downloaded, double-click the installer and follow the prompts.
Step 1 – Installing Support Files
Various support files need to be installed - follow the installation prompts.
Step 2 – Plex Media Server installation
Once the support files are installed, the Plex Media Server will install – follow the prompts.
Step 3 – Launch Plex Media Server for the first time
When the installation is complete, click the Start menu and choose Plex Media Server. If you have Windows Firewall or other Internet Security software installed, you may receive several prompts for access to the Internet. Allow access for each of the prompts. Once done, the installation process is completed and you can begin configuration.
If you are using Internet Explorer, you may notice several prompts:
- Intranet Settings: You may be informed that Intranet settings are turned off. PMS will work correctly with the more secure Internet settings – leave the Security level set to Internet
- Google Chrome Frame: Plex Media Manager works better with Google Chrome Frame installed. Click the notification to install Google Chrome Frame. Follow the prompts.
Step 4 – Configure the Plex Media Server
The Plex Media Server is configured with the Media Manager. To launch the Media Manager:
- Find the Plex icon in the System Tray
- Right-Click the icon and choose Configure Plex Media Server
- Choose whether to allow Automatic Software Updates or not
- The Media Manager will launch in your default Internet Browser
Before you start defining sections, it’s important to make sure your media has been named and organized correctly. The Media File Naming Guide will help you understand how to organize your files. Once this has been completed, you can return to the Media Manager and continue configuration.
